CoderPad Review

CoderPad empowers technical teams by replacing traditional whiteboard interviews with a live programming environment they can use for both in-person and virtual interviews. This solution allows candidates to collaborate with your tech interviewers in real time, working on problems in an Integrated Development Environment (IDE). As a result, you’ll get a firsthand look at the candidates’ skills, style, and problem-solving abilities.

With CoderPad, you can also assign candidates a take-home project—coding exercises with optional automated test case scoring. Supporting over 40 programming languages, you’ll likely find what you need for your tech assessments here. And thanks to the ability to assess candidates’ technical skills while avoiding scheduling conflicts, this tool has been a go-to option for several organizations to do university recruiting.

After acquiring CodinGame, CoderPad now offers game-like tests and challenges for engaging technical assessments on its Screen module. The user-friendly UI, a well-built question library covering over 60 languages and frameworks, 90 pre-set job roles, and the option to create DIY tests are some of the many pros this module inherited from its former product.

Another feature we appreciate in CoderPad’s Screen is its reporting capabilities. Code Playback lets you watch how test takers build solutions, take notes, and be auto-spotted for any suspicious actions. The report is detailed, providing not just the score and duration but also a breakdown evaluation of the candidate’s problem-solving skills, language knowledge, design, and reliability. There's also a comparative score, benchmarking developers against others in their field to easily identify strong candidates.

Integration has never been a CoderPad’s strength, unfortunately. The online coding assessment tool can connect with a handful of popular ATSs such as Greenhouse, Ashby, and SmartRecruiters. Things can get pricey if your ATS isn’t within its integration ecosystem, as this platform only offers its open API to its highest-priced plan users.

Considering most competitors like Coderbyte, HackerRank, and Codility are SOC2 certified, we expected the same from CoderPad. Sadly, the online coding assessment tool announced its SOC2 compliance certification would be confirmed by the end of 2023, yet there haven’t been any updates after that.

We also can’t help but wish there were more forms of prompt assistance, such as phone support, offered to CoderPad’s Starters and Team plans. For the time being, these users can only rely on email support.

Who shouldn't buy CoderPad

With the predefined limit, each plan has the number of tests you can conduct a month, i.e., either 2, 30, or 90; CoderPad would be of most value (financially speaking) to companies that run a similar number of tests per month. For example, if you run ~40 tests a month, the Team plan wouldn’t fit you, and the business plan would be overkill. If you run more than 90 tests a month, the custom Enterprise plan is worth looking into though.

CoderPad is Best For

CoderPad is great for hiring teams that need to conduct interactive technical interviews. It’s also great for those who want to integrate with recruitment tools like Greenhouse, Leve, GoodTime, and others.

How has CoderPad Changed Over Time?

In response to user needs, CoderPad has undergone significant changes over the past few years, including expanding its language support to include Rust and Swift, improving its user interface for better usability, integrating with popular tools like GitLab and Jira, adding new features for real-time collaborative coding, implementing enhanced security measures, and improving hiring features, such as customizable coding challenges and remote coding interviews.

Recently, CoderPad also introduced its Jupyter Notebook to provide users with a more realistic way to interview for data roles.
